May I Suggest...

A few friends have asked me which thrifting stores are my favorite so here's a quick run-down and some tricks I've picked up along the way:

  1. Goodwills are my favorite.  There's just something about them that I'm drawn to.  In San Antonio the promotion that they have is the color of the week is 50% off.  Unfortunately there is no public calendar of the color of the week rotation.  Also, different cities will have different types of promotions.  For example in the Rio Grade Valley they participate in the color of the week but then on Sundays anything tagged with that color is only $.99!  Crazy!  Don't be shy to ask any of the helpful employees at Goodwill what specials they have and create relationships with them.  Some stores already know me by name. ;))  My favorite Goodwills are:
    1. Goodwill on I10 and Dezevala (12332 I10 Frontage Road).  I usually have good luck with clothes and shoes at this location.  Since this location is so close to UTSA you can find a lot of university apparel.
    2. Goodwill on Bulverde.  I usually find cute clothes and home decor at this location.  It is a bit pricier than the other GWs around the city but the quality I've found there is pretty legit.  Recently I found an authentic Burberry pink coat for $13 at this location and a gorgeous Gustav Klimt painting for $19.99.  A lot of Isaac's clothes have come from this location like his Spock shirt (see earlier post).
    3. Goodwill on Stone Oak (21230 US-281).  I've had good clothing, home decor, and book finds at this location.  It's another one that the prices can be a bit on the higher side but the quality is pretty good.
    4. Goodwill in Universal City (7521 E Loop 1604 S Access Rd). Granted this one is in Universal City so it a drive but it's worth it.
  2. Salvation Army also does the same color discount but instead in San Antonio it's two colors instead of one.  My favorite day to go is on Wednesdays (see what I did there?) because ALL clothing, shoes, accessories are 50% off!  The Salvation Army in Stone Oak usually has a few J. Crew, Anthropology, and Kate Spade hidden in there.  There aren't as many Salvation Armies to choose from so my favorite for clothes is the one on 281 in Stone Oak (20230 US-281) and for books is the location on 1604 (10203 W Loop 1604 N).
  3. Uptown Cheapskate is my favorite consignment shop for their style and prices.  They also have a stamp card so you can get a certain percent off of your next purchase after you spend a certain dollar amount.  Another incentive is that they have 15% off your entire purchase during your birthday month.  Fun!
Hope these tips helped you out!
